SELECT A COWRIE 

SELECT A COWRIE is a 1-day pop-up survey exhibition of VILLAGER’s recent works showcasing the evolution of cowrie iconography in their practice as an object of cultural and contextual significance.

Throughout this exhibition, VILLAGER explores the multifaceted role of cowries as a vessel/object in Yoruba culture and the larger African Diaspora, emphasizing their significance in adornment through jewelry making, currency systems, trade networks, rituals, ceremonies, and ancestral veneration practices. SELECT A COWRIE serves as a visual narrative, reflecting on the historical, spiritual, and social dimensions associated with how historical African art, cultural practices, and knowledge systems continue to inform and shape contemporary expressions and experiences.

The exhibition will also accompany a limited series (50) of original acrylic works on 9” x 12” mixed media paper displayed in a salon style. Each print has been numbered and signed for purchase. Exhibition attendees will have an opportunity to purchase prints and the sale price of each print will be determined randomly from $35 - $120 using ChatGPT 3.5. The funds from this SELECT A COWRIE sale will be directly used to fund my studio rent and the resiliency and growth of VILLAGER’s artistic practice.

SELECT A COWRIE will be on view at the BROMO SELTZER ARTS TOWER: Studio 402 on February 17th , 2024from noon-4 pm in conjunction with the Bromo Seltzer Arts Tower open studios.
